Caring for Your Wood

Caring for your wood

A board remembers how it is cared for. It takes three steps.

  1. 01Watch how to care for it
  2. 02Test your board
  3. 03Keep your care plan

Our two minute care video is on its way. Everything it covers is written below.

Next: test your board
The water test. 30 seconds.

Does your board need oil today?

Put a few drops of water on the surface, wait a minute, then tell us what you see.

Next: keep your care plan

Keep your care plan

Leave your email and we will remember for you. Oil days, gift days, and the first word on new pieces.

Is this set yours, or a gift?

A board for someone you love?

Tell us their name and the day to celebrate. We will remind you three weeks ahead and again ten days before, so the gift is never rushed.

We only use your details to write to you about your boards.

01

Wash by hand

Rinse it in warm water with a little mild soap right after you use it, then dry it completely with a towel before you set it down. Wood that air dries while lying flat holds onto moisture along the grain, and that is where warping starts.

02

Skip the dishwasher

The heat, the long soak, and the detergent are made for ceramic and metal, not wood. One run through the dishwasher can split a board that would have lasted years with a two minute hand wash.

03

Oil it regularly

A food-safe mineral oil keeps the grain from drying out and cracking. Oil it once the day it arrives, then again whenever the water test says so. If a few drops of water soak in instead of beading up, or the surface looks pale or feels rough, that is the wood asking for oil.

04

Keep it in sight

A board kept out on the counter is a board that gets used, and a board that gets used is a board that gets cared for. The ones that end up forgotten in a drawer are the ones that crack from neglect, not from use.
